FlossWords is now Boss Words

FlossWords has served me well for the past few years, but it's time to move on to a new website and a new brand: Boss Words! You can find it as bosswords.co and I'll be posting new puzzles and tutorials on solving/constructing crosswords over there. 

The main reason for the new website was to look sleeker and represent my vibe better. FlossWords, to be honest, was always a backup name. The original idea was to find something that rhymed with “cross” that was fun and true to my personality. I wanted Boss Words instead from the start, but I was worried it would conflict with the Boston-based crossword tournament Boswords.


When I thought about it a little more recently, I came to the feeling that Boss Words was different enough in concept from Boswords to adopt a homophonically similar name. And since they’re a crossword tournament happening once a year, and the play on words is with Boston and not boss, hopefully they’re OK with an indie crossword blog of a similar name!


Few new things with Boss Words:

  • Easy and hard versions of themeless puzzles
  • Planning to do video tutorials on how to solve and make themeless crossword puzzles
  • Reviews of NYT Friday and Saturday NYT puzzles when I have time to do so
I'd like to engage with the crossword community more and make puzzles that are more accessible outside the themeless connoisseur world. We'll see how it all goes.

Shopped this puzzle around a bit but didn't get any takers. As I self-publish more and more I am finding more fun in getting to play with the clues and entries more. With major publications (and even smaller ones too), the editors have a lot of different competing interests: obligations to their readers, conventions that are built into the venue's history, and their own personal preferences. It got me thinking a little bit about rejection in general and odd-sized puzzles. Place to Prepare for Some Hard Labor? (Themeless № 4)

I'm trying to post more frequently! Here is another fun themeless to try. I love when the middle is as open as possible, I also love when you can have two stacks intersecting in the middle. I'm also excited to announce I have received my first acceptance from the New York Times! It is for a themeless (not surprising since I don't even make themed puzzles anymore) and will run on a Friday. I have probably submitted almost 20 puzzles to them with no luck yet so this feels like a big win. I wasn't sure if my crossword making skills would ever be good enough to make it into the NYT but now I have a bit more confidence :)  Some constructing notes that I don't think have spoilers but read at your own discretion!
